They say movie stars are dead. That the era of the larger-than-life leading man, who commands the screen with charisma and talent, has faded into the bygones of Hollywood history. Yet, just when the skeptics were ready to declare the end of an era, along comes Glen Powell, proving that the age of the Hollywood leading man is far from over. With a string of successes under his belt and a magnetic presence that captivates audiences worldwide, Powell is undeniably poised to take his place among the pantheon of silver screen legends.

Powell’s journey to stardom has been marked by a series of breakthrough roles that showcase his versatility and talent. From his early days in television to his recent blockbuster hits, he has demonstrated an ability to tackle a wide range of characters with ease and conviction. But what truly sets Powell apart is his uncanny knack for choosing projects that not only dominate the box office but also garner critical acclaim.

One need only look at Powell’s impressive filmography to see the breadth of his talent. In the 2016 hit “Hidden Figures,” Powell delivered a standout performance alongside Hollywood heavyweights Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer, earning praise for his portrayal of astronaut John Glenn. The film not only resonated with audiences but also received numerous accolades, including three Academy Award nominations.

But Powell’s ascent to leading man status was solidified with his role in the highly anticipated sequel “Top Gun: Maverick.” Starring opposite Tom Cruise, Powell captivated audiences with his portrayal of a hotshot pilot, proving that he could hold his own alongside one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The film was a commercial and critical success, further cementing Powell’s status as a bona fide leading man.

In 2023, Hollywood coined Powell as the savior of Hollywood romantic comedies in “Anyone But You,” where he showcased his comedic chops alongside co-star Sydney Sweeney. While the movie received mixed reviews, Powell was praised for his charming performance and infectious chemistry with co-star Sweeney. The film was a box office hit, proving that Powell’s star power transcends genre.

Powell’s next project is “Hitman” where he will be reunited with director Richard Linklater. Having worked with Powell on “Everybody Wants Some!!”, Linklater has seen firsthand the actor’s talent and charm. Linklater’s comments about Powell being an equally great actor as he is a shining movie star, highlight Powell’s ability to shine in leading roles.

“Character actors—they can be great actors, but you might not follow them everywhere. A leading person… it’s just ‘I like them,’” Linklater said. “Ben Affleck had a certain quality like that. He just thought big, even as a young man. It was like, ‘Oh, he has a big picture.’ Glen does, too.”
