Apple announced a number of changes yesterday, including a complete restructuring of the App Store to enable sideloading and new fees for users who publish apps through the store. iOS 17.4 has already introduced many more changes, but they may have been overlooked in favor of more important changes announced specifically for the EU. This is one such new feature that Apple has added. iOS17.4 is the podcast transcript. Apple Podcasts has been around since 2012, but the Cupertino-based company has been supporting his podcasts for nearly 20 years.
Listeners on Apple Podcasts can use transcripts to read the entire episode, search the episode for specific words or phrases, and tap text to play from that point in the episode.
This is a nifty feature that makes podcasts easily accessible to everyone. If you enable transcripts, each word will be highlighted while the episode plays. Additionally, Apple Podcasts users can access the transcript from the episode details page. Just long press on a podcast episode and you’ll see an option to view the transcript.
Apple says it will automatically generate transcripts after new episodes are published. However, it will take some time while Apple processes your transcript.
According to the company, if dynamically inserted audio changes parts of an episode, Podcasts will no longer be able to display segments of audio that have changed since the original transcription. It is also important to note that music lyrics do not appear in the transcript.
In terms of availability, the transcript is now publicly available. iOS17.4 for English, French, German, and Spanish podcasts. Apple says more transcripts are being added to podcasts over time, and the new features will be accessible in more than 170 countries and regions.
