Far-right provocateur Rep. Lauren Boebert faced eight Republican opponents Thursday night in a debate in the new Colorado district she is seeking to represent in Congress.
She narrowly won re-election as a Democrat in Colorado’s 3rd District in 2022, and this year is running in the more conservative 4th District. At a debate Thursday evening in Fort Lupton, Boebert appeared at ease among her fellow conservatives, delivering fiery rhetoric and defending pro-Trump hard-right positions. Ta.
“Everyone will talk like a member of the Freedom Caucus, but only one will govern as a member of the Freedom Caucus,” Boebert said in her opening statement, calling the “coronation” in the new district He added that he had no expectations. I was looking forward to “earning your vote.”
But Boebert has also faced constant criticism from rivals over the redistricting, moving to the other side of the state to improve her chances after a strong primary candidate emerged in the 3rd District. .
State Rep. Mike Lynch calls Boebert a “carpetbagger” after Boebert was forced to resign as state House Republican minority leader Wednesday over her DUI arrest. he suggested.
Most candidates avoided discussing what brought Boebert to their district in the first place. The incident occurred in September, when Boebert was in the middle of divorcing her husband at the time, and Boebert was caught on her security camera vaping and groping her. Her date at a performance of the musical “Beetlejuice.”
Boebert said during the debate that a “fresh start” is needed after a divorce. “Her sons need some relief from what has happened,” she added. “And this move is the right move for me and for them.”
At one point, candidates were asked to raise their hands if they had ever been arrested. Six of the nine candidates who took to the stage raised their hands, and the audience cheered and applauded. Trent Leasey, a Navy veteran and business owner, raised his hand to give Lynch and Boebert a high-five.
In her segment, Boebert said she had only been arrested once for failing to appear in court for careless driving, which she called during the debate “a simple traffic violation without pay.” However, local news media reported at least two additional arrests. In one incident in 2015, Boebert told an arresting officer that she had “friends at Fox News” and that her arrest would make national news.
A total of 11 candidates are vying to succeed Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, who announced in November that he would not seek re-election. Buck cited election denialism (a widespread belief among many Republicans that the 2020 election was stolen from Donald J. Trump) as part of the reason for his decision. He also cited the refusal of many of his Republican colleagues to condemn the January election. On June 6, 2021, a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol.
Boebert, by contrast, has passionately promoted false claims about the 2020 election. During Thursday’s debate, he was one of the few candidates on stage to raise his hand when asked whether the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.
Colorado’s 4th Congressional District is much more conservative than the 3rd, and Boebert’s move is expected to make it easier for less divisive Republicans to win in their old districts. After Boebert’s redistricting, a Cook Political Report analysis says Boebert’s old seat will lean Republican in the November election.
And the winner of the primary in the new district will likely be in a strong position to win in 2022 in the district where Mr. Buck received 60% of the vote. Boebert narrowly won re-election that year, edging her out. Her Democratic opponent, Adam Frisch, received about 500 votes.
