Vault Café celebrates 10th anniversary with special event January 27th
A cafe in the heart of downtown Nanaimo is celebrating 10 years in the community by offering 12 hours of free entertainment.
The anniversary event begins at noon on Saturday, Jan. 27, and will feature more than 20 performers from throughout the business’ history, as well as some new faces. The list includes Fine, New Age Dolls, and Cole Moon.
“We have people coming back from the early days…” said Jeremy Van Wyk of Vault Café. “It’s pretty amazing when you think about the range of people who came here, played their first gig, moved on, and are still here.”
During the day, guests can also enjoy drag performances, miming, and performances by New York-based drummer Chris Corsano, who has performed with Joe McPhee, Jim O’Rourke, Bjork, and more. Van Wyk said there is usually a kind of anniversary show held each year, often on a small scale, where staff and performers come together to pay tribute to owner Amanda Scott’s hard work. Then he spoke.
Although he moved to Nanaimo for the music scene and has lived in the city for about eight years, Van Wyk said he can’t imagine the city without the kind of space the Vault provides.
“When you look at how many people move here and find community there…I don’t know how I would have met all the friends I have now if it wasn’t for this place…and it’s interesting. , I mean it’s actually the people of Nanaimo who started it,” he said.
Vault Café opened on January 24, 2014 and will celebrate its one-year anniversary on Saturday at 499 Wallace Street.
