The Pend Oreilles Arts Council will welcome renowned artist Lucy West to POAC Gallery in February.
Art lovers and space enthusiasts are invited to attend the opening reception on Friday, February 2 from 5 to 7 p.m., 313 N Second Ave., Suite B. A special exhibition titled “Artistry in Orbit” will showcase the intersection of art. Science in West’s fascinating paintings.
Lucy West employs an experimental approach that she calls “artistic exploration.” Her creative journey spans diverse fields, including nature, humanity, science, quantum science, physics, astronomy, space exploration, and the rich tapestry of life and culture on Earth. Deeply committed to her storytelling, West’s work weaves stories that transcend time and connect past, present, and future.
“Artifacts provide evidence that storytelling is an integral part of the human experience,” West said. “My goal is to carry on this ancient tradition in a modern way and encourage moments of dialogue and reflection that may not occur in our daily lives.”
Visitors have the opportunity to explore West’s diverse collection of works, each a testament to her curiosity and mastery. Her paintings, commissioned and exhibited at prestigious venues such as NASA’s Launch Control Center, the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., and the Lowell Observatory, demonstrate West’s unique blend of art and science.
West’s space and science works have received attention in the aerospace and science communities and are featured in the collections of astronauts, astronomers, and scientists. Her work, published in books, magazines, documentaries, and websites, is praised for her ability to inspire and captivate.
The opening reception provides a special opportunity to meet Lucy West in person, gain insight into her creative process, and explore the story behind each painting. Original artwork and prints will also be available for purchase, allowing attendees to take home a piece of the cosmic story.
West and her husband, Brent, find inspiration for their art in the tranquility of their home studio gallery, surrounded by spectacular views of mountains and lakes. Lucy West’s work reflects the awe-inspiring beauty of the night sky without light pollution, capturing the ancient light of the Milky Way and stars on canvas.
