Every time I get on a plane and have to pass through business class to get to my seat, I mumble a little to myself. These seats are certainly comfortable, carefully spaced, and have plenty of legroom. It’s a bit unfair that you have to march around with such luxury to get to the economics section, isn’t it?
But while I’ve always coveted a business class seat, I just couldn’t bring myself to cough up cash or credit card miles to book it. I’d rather spread my spending across the trip, maybe book a nicer hotel or book more excursions than I would otherwise. As a result, over the years I’ve had a lot of practice making economy class seats as comfortable as possible. Here are some tips I’ve found that work for me.
Please bring your own food
Sometimes airline tickets include meals, but I’ve never been a big fan of them. And I definitely don’t like paying high prices to eat inside the terminal before a flight. Instead, I like to pack my own snacks and meals when I fly.
Include a variety of healthy items you can eat when you’re hungry or bored, such as granola bars or trail mix. Also, prepare hearty, portable meals that you can take with you on the go (think chicken salad, chickpea salad, grain bowls, etc.). I feel much healthier and more comfortable on my travel days, when I’m forced to sit for hours at the gate or inside the plane, by avoiding processed foods that are high in salt.
It’s also a good idea to bring a reusable water bottle when you travel, rather than relying on expensive sugary or alcoholic drinks purchased at the airport or on the plane. Dehydration can make you feel sluggish and bloated, two things you definitely want to avoid when flying.
Packs all the creature comforts for red eyes
If the price is right, I’ll book an overnight flight so I don’t “waste” my vacation on a trip, but that doesn’t mean I enjoy it. It takes a while to fall asleep at your best, but a cramped economy seat never does. I’ve spent years learning what to do with red eye for a more comfortable setup.

Be sure to bring a quality eye mask, earplugs, and your trusty neck pillow. Not all neck pillows work for everyone, but I’ve found a version that continues to support my neck without making it feel like it’s being strangled. This really makes a difference in being able to nod off on the plane.
I also like to bring noise-canceling headphones to wear over my earplugs if the plane is particularly noisy, and an extra-large scarf that can be used as a blanket if needed.I’m sure they look very similar Barneys on the weekendsIt’s chic to be bundled up in all your gear, but if you can get even a few hours of sleep, it’s worth it.
Please check the seating chart when choosing your seat
With a basic economy ticket, you may not be able to choose your seat when you book your flight, but if the option is available, search online before choosing.
Use Seat Guru to search for your flight number and check the seat map to find seats with extra legroom, non-reclining seats, or seats next to the toilet. This will allow you to make a more informed decision and ideally give you a wider queue.
Book with a travel credit card
For added comfort on the day of your trip, always use a travel credit card when booking your flight. If you have a good airline credit card, you’ll be able to join priority boarding groups even on the base fare of economy, meaning you’ll be able to secure valuable overhead bin space early. These credit cards also include free checked baggage if you only want to bring your personal items on the plane, which gives you even more legroom under the seat in front of you.
Some cards include access to airport lounges, either as a regular benefit or as an annual pass. While this won’t make the flight itself more comfortable, it will provide you with nice amenities, a relaxing experience before boarding, and a better mental state on board.
comfortable flight
Booking economy tickets is a great way to spread your vacation budget, but it’s not the most comfortable choice. Plan ahead and do everything you can to have a peaceful flight so you can start and end your trip better without the personal financial burden of business class. .
