The central government has approved the elevation of Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Prasanna B. Varare to the position of Supreme Court judge. Justice Valare’s name was first recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on January 19. On Wednesday, Judge Prasanna B. Valare was appointed to the Supreme Court. As soon as he takes the oath, the total strength of the Supreme Court will be 34 judges, including the chief justice.
The proposal describes Judge Valare as a judge of impeccable conduct and integrity with 23 years of practicing law. He is ranked 6th in the combined seniority list of all India High Court judges. Judge Valare’s appointment comes less than a week after the S.C. University recommended his name.
With the confirmation of Justice Valare’s name to the Supreme Court, he becomes the third Dalit judge. Besides him, Justice BR Gabai and Justice CT Ravikumar are Dalits in the Supreme Court. Judge Gabai will also become the country’s chief judge.
Justice Varela, 61, is an alumnus of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. He has been practicing law for many years. He assumed office as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in October 2022. The post is vacant after Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaur retired in December.
In its resolution, the conference emphasized that the Supreme Court should function without any vacancies, given its workload. The conference resolution states that as the workload of judges has increased significantly, it is necessary to ensure that the courts have judges at their best at all times.
