Pflugerville City Council worked with local business owners to approve new murals on buildings in the downtown area on January 23rd.

The artwork is planned for the back of West Pecan Coffee + Beer at 100 West Pecan St. Owner Mary Foss granted the city a temporary easement or permit, detailing a minimum five-year term and a longer term if either party chooses to continue. The agreement, according to city documents.

some context

In March, the Pflugerville City Council adopted an art in public places program. Under established arts policy, public art can be commissioned on private property through the city’s public easement agreements.

The addition of murals and similar projects is consistent with the city’s goal of increasing the availability of public art in the downtown area.

The city commissioned area artist Mike Johnston for the project. Johnston’s mural design combines traditional postcard aesthetics with modern touches, with the phrase “Greetings from Pflugerville” prominently displayed throughout the art space.

The fee will cost $31,000 and will be covered by the city’s hotel occupancy tax revenue.

“Public art has proven to be a catalyst for creating community and togetherness, and new art installations foster creativity and possibility,” Foss said in a letter to the city. “As a downtown business owner, I deeply appreciate the city’s efforts to work with local businesses like myself to strengthen the bonds of community in Pflugerville.”
