Norwegian Life Show #76: Hear all about Sami culture in 2024, from the Sami parliament and efforts to keep the language alive, to the importance of handicrafts and songs.
The recent wind turbine controversy has brought Sámi culture and indigenous rights back into the spotlight here in Norway and around the world.
Bodø will soon begin its year as European Capital of Culture, and the team is putting Sami culture at the heart of the program.
So who better to introduce us to the different facets of Sami culture than Maria Hernes Baer, coordinator of the Sami program at Bodo 2024?
We talk about the Sami identity, some elements of the culture, including what tourists do and don’t experience, and our plans to showcase Sami culture at Bodo 2024.

Introduction to Sami culture in Norway
I couldn’t go into much detail on the program. Instead, we have decided to provide a general overview of some important elements of Norwegian Sami culture, including:
History of Norwegianization: The Norwegian government has been pursuing a policy of forced integration for many years. Maria says it is impossible to talk about Sami culture without understanding this history.
Sami language: Various Sami languages are spoken in Norway. Efforts are underway to protect and promote some of the most endangered animals.
Duozi: The best translation of this is Sámi handicrafts, but as Maria explains, there is much more to it than that.
Yoiku: Halfway between song and poetry, joik remains an important part of Sami culture to this day.
