Vatican City (CNA) — Attention Catholic artists: The Vatican has announced an art competition that will allow you to display your paintings inside St. Peter’s Basilica, along with works by Renaissance masters Michelangelo and Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
The winner of the contest will receive a prize of 120,000 euros (approximately $131,000) and the right to display an original set of Stations of the Cross paintings in a temporary exhibition at the cathedral during Lent in 2026. Masu.
The contest is free and open to artists from anywhere in the world. Artists are free to choose their style and technique, but must draw the 14 stations of the traditional cross.
To apply, the Vatican is asking applicants to fill out an online application form between January 8 and January 31, 2024.
This form requires you to select up to 10 original works of art from the past and submit a PDF with a brief caption and relevant technical information.
Artists must also submit a brief resume in English or Italian. Application forms will be available on the official website of St. Peter’s Basilica from January 8th.
If accepted to participate in the Vatican Art Competition, selected candidates will be notified by March 15, 2024.

The submitted sketches will be presented at a solo exhibition in the Vatican and will be reviewed by a committee appointed by the Organization of St. Peter’s, the office responsible for preserving and maintaining St. Peter’s Basilica. Click here for more information and contest rules.

After winning the commission, the winning artist will have one year to complete the 14 Stations of the Cross paintings (each on a 4-foot by 4-foot canvas) by December 31, 2025. More grace will be granted.
The winners’ paintings will be temporarily exhibited in St. Peter’s Basilica during the liturgical period of Lent, starting February 18, 2026.
