Apple Podcasts in iOS 17.4 now offers automatic episode transcript text — a huge win in accessibility for hearing-impaired users

The iOS 17.4 beta brings you the ability to transcribe your shows on Apple Podcasts, making episodes available to listen to as soon as they’re published.

in Post new feature details, Apple explained how transcripts work in iOS 17.4. “Apple automatically generates a transcript after a new episode is published. Your episode will be available to listen to immediately, and the transcript will be available shortly thereafter. Your transcript. It will take some time while the document is processed.”

When you use the Apple Podcasts app with the new update, you’ll see a new “quote icon” when you play an episode. Press this to view the transcript. It’s similar to displaying lyrics while a song is playing in the Apple Music app on iOS. It tracks what the host says throughout the episode, so you can scroll back and forth to get back to specific points you may have missed.

Podcast creators on Apple’s services were sent an email about the new changes, but were not given the opportunity to have the new feature transcribe existing and upcoming episodes. We expect this feature to arrive once iOS 17.4 is released.

Another victory for accessibility — an iMore perspective

As a long-time listener of the iMore show, long before I became a co-host, I was exposed to manuscripts that would have been written by then-iMore staff and published with new episodes. Although this was useful, she needed to make her web page available somewhere so that hearing-impaired users could read the transcription.

Tracking episodes is becoming much easier for listeners using Apple Podcasts. It would be great if this was automatically generated, as long as the podcast owner allows it. This is another example of how seriously Apple takes accessibility. I’m sure there will be plenty of happy users waiting to try this out once it’s also available on his Apple Podcasts on macOS and Apple TV.

I’ve been using another podcast app, Overcast, for years now. I simply prefer its layout and functionality to what Apple Podcasts offers. But once iOS 17.4 arrives, you’ll want to give it another try and see how well Apple’s transcription feature actually works.
