PTI, New Delhi. Karnataka High Court Chief Justice PB Varare was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on Wednesday. Once he is sworn in, the Supreme Court will function with the full capacity of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India. He is the third sitting judge of the Supreme Court from a scheduled caste.

There was a vacancy on the Supreme Court.

Currently, Justices BR Gavai and CT Ravikumar of the Supreme Court are also from scheduled castes. There was a vacancy in the Supreme Court after Justice SK Kaul retired last month. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Judge Valare’s name, and he was appointed within a week of the recommendation.

Who is Judge Valare?

Justice Valare is a resident of Karnataka. He was born in 1961 in Nipani, Karnataka. After studying law, he began practicing as a lawyer in 1985. He was appointed to the Bombay High Court in 2008 after he served in various places. Thereafter, he took over as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in October 2022.

The Collegium had recommended Valare’s name.

While recommending Justice Valare’s name, the Supreme Court Collegium said that he is one of the senior-most judges of the High Courts and the only Chief Justice of the High Courts from the Scheduled Castes.

While recommending the name, the conference said the Supreme Court worked with the full strength of its 34 judges last year, resulting in 52,191 cases disposed of in the 2023 calendar year. In its recommendations, the university also cited increased workloads for judges.
