Two Menlo College wrestling team members say they plan to transfer to other schools after the Atherton institution failed to adequately respond to repeated use of racist language by teammates in text threads and in-person conversations. The students say that even after the wrestling coach held a team meeting to address the incident, the behavior continued.
After reporting the matter to administration, the students said they received little meaningful action in response. Menlo College’s president, Steven Weiner, issued a statement saying the school is “committed to maintaining a respectful and inclusive community” and that it had conducted an investigation and taken appropriate steps in accordance with its policies. The president declined to disclose whether any students were disciplined, citing privacy rules.
The students said they are speaking out publicly in the hope that others affected by similar situations will feel empowered to come forward.
