Reports suggest that OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is venturing into the development of its own search product to challenge Google’s dominance. While this endeavor holds promise, OpenAI is anticipated to encounter substantial hurdles in attempting to make a notable impact on Google’s search stronghold.

According to insights from The Information, OpenAI is actively working on a search product infused with generative AI capabilities, leveraging Microsoft’s Bing as a partial power source. Microsoft, a major investor in OpenAI, has integrated the company’s technologies into its Copilot AI software for Microsoft 365 and Windows. Despite this collaboration, OpenAI’s task of competing with Google’s search prowess demands more than just technological support.

Microsoft had previously declared its intentions to rival Google’s search dominance by incorporating OpenAI’s GPT technology into a new version of Bing, announced in February 2023. However, the latest statistics indicate that Microsoft’s efforts have yet to make a substantial impact on Google’s market share.

As of January 2024, Microsoft’s Bing holds a meager 3.43% market share, reflecting a marginal increase of less than 1% from the previous year, according to StatCounter. In contrast, Google maintains a commanding 91.46% market share, with a negligible decrease of less than 1% from the previous year.

OpenAI’s plan to run its search product on Bing may face analogous challenges, with Google’s unyielding popularity being a significant factor. Moreover, Google has been integrating generative AI into its search functionality, presenting AI-generated responses prominently at the top of the screen.

While ChatGPT has garnered widespread popularity, translating this success into a competitive search offering could be an intricate task. Google’s established presence and the seamless integration of generative AI into its search results pose formidable challenges for OpenAI. Additionally, Google, despite trailing in some areas of generative AI, continues to dominate the search landscape.

Microsoft’s strides with generative AI in enterprise solutions have not significantly translated into search engine success. The company’s progress in other domains has not translated into a notable dent in Google’s search market share. OpenAI, even with ChatGPT’s popularity, faces an uphill battle against the formidable search giant as it strives to carve its niche in the search engine landscape.
