The Golden State Valkyries continued their strong early-season form with a dominant 97-70 victory over the Connecticut Sun, delivering one of their most complete performances of the year in front of an energized home crowd at Chase Center. The win improved Golden State’s record to 4-2 and reinforced the growing belief that the league’s newest franchise is quickly becoming a serious contender.

While the final score reflected Golden State’s offensive depth, much of the attention centered on the highly anticipated WNBA debut of rookie guard Justė Jocytė. Selected fifth overall in the 2025 draft, Jocytė recently arrived after playing professionally in Europe and immediately gave fans a glimpse of her potential. In limited minutes, she contributed five points and two assists while showing poise that impressed both teammates and coaches.

Golden State’s Depth Takes Over

The Valkyries overwhelmed Connecticut with balanced scoring and relentless defensive pressure. Rather than relying on a single standout star, Golden State showcased the kind of collective effort that has quickly become its identity.

Forward Gabby Williams led the team with 15 points, pushing the pace offensively while disrupting Connecticut defensively. Her energy appeared contagious, with the Valkyries maintaining intensity throughout all four quarters. Meanwhile, Kaila Charles added 12 points and seven rebounds, helping control the game physically on both ends of the floor.

One of the evening’s biggest boosts came from the return of Cecilia Zandalasini, who had recently been sidelined in concussion protocol. She wasted little time making an impact, knocking down an early three-pointer and helping stabilize the Valkyries’ rotation.

Golden State’s balanced approach produced a remarkable statistical achievement: 12 different players scored during the game, matching a WNBA record. That level of production highlighted the organization’s emphasis on depth, versatility, and unselfish basketball.

Defense Continues To Define the Valkyries

Although the offense was explosive, defense again proved to be the foundation of the Valkyries’ success. Connecticut struggled to establish a rhythm for most of the night, shooting below 39% from the field while committing 18 turnovers.

Head coach Natalie Nakase praised the team’s communication and chemistry after the game, emphasizing how connected the roster has become despite being a relatively new group. That cohesion has helped Golden State exceed expectations during its first seasons in the league.

The franchise has rapidly developed a reputation for intensity, defensive versatility, and strong home-court energy. After surprising many observers with a playoff appearance in its inaugural campaign, Golden State appears determined to build on that momentum rather than settle for early success.

A Rising Team Drawing Attention

The Valkyries’ latest win also reflected the broader growth of women’s basketball in the Bay Area. Chase Center has quickly developed into one of the WNBA’s loudest environments, and the organization’s aggressive roster-building strategy is already paying dividends.

For Golden State, the emergence of young talents like Jocytė alongside established veterans could make the team even more dangerous as the season progresses. If the Valkyries continue combining defensive pressure with balanced scoring, they may soon move from expansion success story to legitimate championship threat.
